About the Monasteries

• Great Meteoron Monastery: The largest and oldest, founded in the 14th century by St. Athanasios, features a grand church, museum, and historic wine barrel. A steep climb rewards with breathtaking views.
• Varlaam Monastery: Built in the 14th century and restored in the 16th, it showcases a beautiful chapel, an old pulley system, and a rich collection of manuscripts and icons.
• Roussanou Monastery: A 16th-century monastery on a lower rock, home to 15 nuns, offering a serene experience with easier access and fewer stairs.
• St. Stephen’s Monastery: The most accessible with a paved path, founded in the 14th century and run by nuns, it features a tranquil chapel and panoramic views.

Note: Monasteries are selected based on accessibility and opening hours, ensuring a seamless experience. A strict dress code applies: men must wear long pants, and women need long skirts and covered shoulders. Wrap skirts and shawls are provided at entrances.
